Fishes and Loaves
The first Tuesday of each month, Lakeshore United Church volunteers gather in the kitchen to prepare to-go home cooked meals to distribute locally. In partnership with other local churches, Fishes and Loaves is an opportunity to respond to food security, but also isolation as many of our regulars get together to share the meal together. It can also mean a night off from cooking for busy single parents, with children often looking forward to the meal.
In December 2022, a team of several volunteers prepared traditional Christmas dinner for 85 people alongside Trinity Christian Reformed Church who prepared an additional 100 meals.
Prior to COVID-19 lockdowns, all meals were served in person, but since 2020 we’ve switched to a takeaway model. As inflation continues to rise alongside the cost of living, we are seeing an increase in the request for meals each month.
Local churches raise money internally to support their initiatives and also receive funding from local businesses and 100 People Who Care.
